"ADVANCING THE STATUS OF WOMEN WORLDWIDE"

I was born and raised in a tiny village (Long Sutton) in England. It was an idyllic childhood complete with loving family, thatched cottages, and country gardens, but I needed to leave - I wanted adventure and travel.

I first moved, to London, but it proved to be just the beginning - itchy feet, combined with a wish to give something back, prompted me to join Voluntary Service Overseas (the British equivalent of the Peace Corps). I spent 2 years in Ghana, West Africa, teaching at a secondary school and, as an unexpected bonus, getting to know my future husband Bob, a Peace Corps volunteer.

After Africa, with no jobs or real plans, we decided to try our luck in Colorado. This is where we ended up, settled and raised our three boys. But now, after all the years, we find that our feet and our consciences are still itchy.

Bob is rejoining the Peace Corps. He leaves for Moldova in Eastern Europe, on June 6th where he will teach and supervise other teachers. His itch is greater than mine and I will not accompany him this time. I still love to travel and want to help others, but I also like my creature comforts too much to redo the Peace Corps experience. So I choose to stay here with our sons and our granddaughter. I will continue to work at the Colorado Springs Education Association and I plan to visit Bob as often as possible during the next two years.

I am grateful that Zonta is in my life now, for I have some extra time and I am eager to see what possibilities the future will bring.

Helen's birthday is May 10th! Happy birthday, Helen and thank you for sharing your stories! I was so intrigued with the Long Sutton village that I found the following to share on Helen's place of birth:
