Member News -
Glad to her that Rita Jones is recovering nicely from her recent gallbladder surgery. Kris Wells and Susie Nulty are helping Rita's sister look after her. Good job, ladies. bre

From Mary Louise Clay - "I am finally in a soft brace unless I am doing rather heavy walking. I have been told I have to face reality and change my life accordingly but so far I guess I am still trying to discover what the reality of my limitations are." Guess we all can identify with your thinking, we wish you well and hope to see you at a meeting soon. bre

Had a quick e-mail from Patty Boone saying she is resolving a personal issue and hopes to be more available after June. We've missed her and look forward to seeing her later in the year.

It is a pleasure to report that Aggie Reynolds has joined our club. She will be at the Fashion Show - be sure to look her up there. Hope to install her at the May meeting.

Arranging life to take full advantage of the ZI Convention is challenging. There are so many wonderful things to do in New York in addition to the rewarding schedule that Zonta has arranged for us. I am happy to report that Karen Pauley has been able to schedule her life to join Renee, Ellen and me in the big apple. It's not too late for others to come, too. Think about it.

Sorry I won't be at the installation dinner, my family is having a big reunion in Florida during that time. It is always an inspiring time to witness the installation of those members who have stepped out to lead our club. We are proud of each of you - congratulations!

Member Profile - Helen Smithwick

I was born and raised in a tiny village (Long Sutton) in England. It was an idyllic childhood complete with loving family, thatched cottages, and country gardens, but I needed to leave - I wanted adventure and travel.

I first moved, to London, but it proved to be just the beginning - itchy feet, combined with a wish to give something back, prompted me to join Voluntary Service Overseas (the British equivalent of the Peace Corps). I spent 2 years in Ghana, West Africa, teaching at a secondary school and, as an unexpected bonus, getting to know my future husband Bob, a Peace Corps volunteer.

After Africa, with no jobs or real plans, we decided to try our luck in Colorado. This is where we ended up, settled and raised our three boys. But now, after all the years, we find that our feet and our consciences are still itchy.

Bob is rejoining the Peace Corps. He leaves for Moldova in Eastern Europe, on June 6th where he will teach and supervise other teachers. His itch is greater than mine and I will not accompany him this time. I still love to travel and want to help others, but I also like my creature comforts too much to redo the Peace Corps experience. So I choose to stay here with our sons and our granddaughter. I will continue to work at the Colorado Springs Education Association and I plan to visit Bob as often as possible during the next two years.

I am grateful that Zonta is in my life now, for I have some extra time and I am eager to see what possibilities the future will bring.

Editor's notes:
Helen's birthday is May 10th! Happy birthday, Helen and thank you for sharing your stories! I was so intrigued with the Long Sutton village that I found the following to share on Helen's place of birth:

Highway Cleanup a big MILE of success!

On April 17, Shannon, Sharon, Phyllis, Teri, Helen, Ava, Susie, Zonto Jerry Hermans, and Friend of Zonta Karen Burt filled *** 30 *** bags of trash. Interesting finds included 2 switchblades (by eagle-eyed Helen), a scuba mask, a cell phone (in 2 pieces), a baby bottle and part of a computer. It appears that every smoker in Colorado throws their cigarette butts in our mile.
The Highway signs with our club name on them are beautiful.
Congratulations to Pat Kosley for setting up this wonderful project that continues to get our name out there and provides a chance to visit with fellow Zontians.
See more pictures in the NEW scrapbook page!

KUDOS to Shannon Rowan for helping out Pat Kosley on the Highway Cleanup project in April. We did a highway "spring clean!"

KUDOS to Kate Brewster - How proud we all were at the Area Meeting, watching Kate Brewster use her considerable skills at organization and general graciousness. Good work! - from Betty Edwards

KUDOS to Renee Troppe and Ellen Slavitz - Congratulations to Renee and Ellen for the awesome job they did in condensing the proposed Zonta Int'l bylaws. A really tough job, and they are fairly new members. Wow. - from Betty Edwards
